Meet our January Builder of the Month, Rich Krier of Wausau Homes Indianola.
Owners Rich Krier, and son Brian Krier have been building custom homes for over 40 years. They are experts at navigating the homebuilding process and ready to help make every homebuyer’s experience an enjoyable one from start to finish.

How long have you been a Wausau Homes builder?

I have been a builder for Wausau Homes for over 45 years, and during that time I have built over 550 homes.

How did you get into the Home Building Business?

I had just left the Navy when an opportunity to join Wausau Homes presented itself to me. I first started in Ottumwa, Iowa on the production line for a week, then worked on a set crew for five weeks before I switched to working in a design studio for two years as staff. Marv Schuette, former President and Owner of Wausau Homes, later approached me with an opportunity to become a builder in either Indianola or Davenport, Iowa. I chose to build in Indianola, and the rest is history.

Why did you choose to be a Wausau Homes builder?

Wausau Homes has always been a leader in system-built housing. I was impressed by the organization and the processes they had in place for home building.

When you’re not building homes what do you like to do?

I love being outdoors. Downhill skiing with my family, trophy pike fishing, and competitive outboard boat racing occupy the remainder of my time.

What part of the custom home building process do you find the most rewarding?

Developing a relationship with homeowners is the best part of my profession, both in the short and long term.

If you were building your dream home what is the one feature you would have to have?

It may seem simple, but having a patio door in the master bedroom to capture the scenery outside is the one feature that is a must for me.

What is one tip you would give to all custom home buyers?

When you are designing your floor plans, you should visualize your home the way you want it to look on the inside and outside.

Are there any home building trends in your area that stand out?

Cabinetry painted in darker colors have become more popular in the past couple of years.

What has been your most rewarding build to date and why?

After doing this for so long, every house has a story, but the builds that stand out the most are the ones where we exceeded the homeowner’s expectations. Being a part of that type of joy really sticks with you.

What events can interested home buyers find you at in the coming months?

Set day parties are always fun; we have one coming up at the beginning of January. We will also be at the Iowa Home Show this January 10th – 12th.

This is a business that you wouldn’t expect repeat customers, but it has been encouraging how many times I have had repeat customers. I’ll always treasure building homes for three generations of the same family. That is extremely special to me.
