EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT SINGLE, DOUBLE AND TRIPLE PANE WINDOWS

Reduce your energy bills and enjoy a safe, beautiful custom home with the right window styles. Most homeowners focus on the shape, size, and style of windows for their home, but the number of panes has the greatest effect on your home’s energy efficiency. Explore the pros and cons of single, double and triple pane windows today. Build an energy-efficient custom home with these window options.

Single Pane Windows

The number of panes in a window describes the number of glass layers that make up your window. A single pane window has only a single sheet of glass, so it has the least insulation. Few new homes are being built with single pane windows because these windows allow a significant amount of heat to transfer. This means you’ll pay more for heating your home in the winter and cooling it in the summer.

The one advantage of single pane windows is their cost. This type of window is the most affordable at the time of installation. You will pay more in yearly energy costs, spending more over time, but the initial investment is less expensive than both double and triple pane windows.

Double Pane Windows

QA common go-to option for new custom homes is double pane technology. These windows seal gas or air between two panels of glass. You’ll receive an R-value of 3.5 or 4, which is approximately 50% more than single pane windows. An improved R-value means less heat will escape your home in the winter or enter it in the summer.

Double pane windows provide more noise reduction than a single pane window. The insulating nature of this design also reduces sound transfer, so you may not hear traffic on the road, barking dogs or other neighborhood noises inside your home.

The biggest disadvantage of double pane windows is that they are not triple pane. This design is an improvement on the quality of a single window pane but lacks the R-value and insulation of a triple pane option. However, they land in the middle of the road when it comes to pricing and can be a more budget conscience option.

Triple pane Windows

The highest quality windows available, these durable designs boast three layers of glass with two cushions of gas or air. Prepare for an R-value between 9 and 10, giving these windows a much greater efficiency than double pane. For extreme temperatures, loud noises and direct sunlight, nothing beats a triple pane window.

Why aren’t all windows created with three panes of glass? These windows are a significant investment compared to double and single pane alternatives. An entire home of triple pane windows can be a significant expense if you’re trying to build a home on a budget. Some designers recommend using these effective options only in areas of your home where you want more protection from outdoor elements such as East and North facing windows of your custom home design.

Types of Windows for Your Custom Home

The number of window panes is one of the most important decisions, but it’s far from the only one. Work with a local Wausau Homes builder to determine the best window size, shape, and material for your new custom home. Here are some common types to choose from for your new home project:

  • Arched
  • Single-hung
  • Double-hung
  • Casement
  • Awning
  • Bay
  • Glass Block

Some of these types, such as glass block, don’t come in the traditional single, double and triple pane options. Most, however, come in all three pane types, so you can customize your windows to match your budget and your home design.

Most windows have a visible frame, so the frame color and material are important style choices. Compare vinyl, aluminum and wood clad frames to create the exterior look and interior feel you desire.

  • Wood clad frames offer a high-quality option with a timeless look but come with a higher price tag.
  • Vinyl is becoming a popular option due to the low cost and maintenance, as well as numerous modern color options available to choose from.
  • Aluminum is an affordable option that will not warp but is less insulated than other materials.

Finally, you will need to consider the size and quantity of windows when determining your custom home design, as these two factors can significantly affect your overall budget. A large bay window can give you an impressive view of your property, but it may affect your home’s energy efficiency and increase your budget. Choosing the right windows for your new custom home can seem overwhelming, but our professional builders are here to help every step of the way.
