How long have you been a Wausau Homes builder?
I have been a Wausau Homes builder since 2015.
How did you get into the Home Building Business?
I started my career in the building trades 40 plus years ago working for my uncle in the construction industry, where I learned to build wood basements, foundations, apartments and commercial buildings. I later started learning how to construct both residential and commercial pole buildings. At the age of 20, I became a crew leader, managing multiple home construction sites, while also learning to build in-ground swimming pools. Building up over a decade of experience, I realized my passion was in new home construction and started my own construction company building small projects and eventually moved to building full panelized custom homes and site condos with Wausau Homes.
Why did you choose to be a Wausau Homes builder?
Component building. My experience with Wausau Homes goes back many years when I was a part of a set crew for Wausau Homes. After my first set, I was determined I would never go back to stick building again. Wausau Homes has the best component system which allows us to schedule the build with a known completion time.
When you're not building homes what do you like to do?
Spending time with family is always my favorite thing to do when I’m not managing a project.
What part of the custom home building process do you find the most rewarding?
Ability to build a house on a schedule and see it all come together from drawing to completion.
If you were building your dream home what is the one feature you would have to have?
For me, the one feature I couldn't live without would be a big garage.
What is one tip you would give to all custom home buyers?
When choosing a builder, you should make sure they have a building process from beginning to end that you can understand and follow.
Are there any home building trends in your area that stand out?
The most popular trend we see in the Kalamazoo area right now is white vertical siding with black windows and trim, as well as screened porches.
What has been your most rewarding build to date and why?
The Thomas House, our first build with Wausau Homes will always be a memorable one. We accomplished it on time, their way and within budget. Every home project we have built to date is important and rewarding for the whole team.

With the shortage of workforce that currently faces the industry, the ability to use components is now. We need to engage this but understand that we need to work greener, more economical and efficient in the future to be successful. We have to address all aspects and affordability is a huge one. As current president of the Western Michigan Home Builders Association, we have a commitment to find new ways to partner together to become greener, more efficient and bring down costs.
The Kalamazoo team is part of the Kalamazoo Attainable Homes Partnership (KAHP) that seeks to provide high-quality homes built by HBA members that are both attainable in cost and provide the homeowners with low maintenance costs. The KAHP homes feature the same quality construction, such as 50-year roofing, energy saving insulation and heating and air conditioning systems, durable flooring materials and so much more – saving families in these homes thousands a year in utilities bills and maintenance for generations to come. Contact our Wausau Homes Design Studio to schedule a visit or find out how you can get moved into one of these beautiful attainable homes.
