How long have you been a Wausau Homes builder?

My family has been partnered with Wausau Homes for over 39 years now, so I have been in the home building business since a teenager, but I officially became the owner of Wausau Homes Minocqua in 2008 right after the banks crashed. Great timing!

How did you get into the Home Building Business?

We’re a second-generation business that my father, Jake Schoone, started in 1968. His company consisted of building homes, remodeling, and cabinetry making. I started working for him at 14 pouring concrete and carrying cement blocks.

Why did you choose to be a Wausau Homes builder?

I partnered with Wausau Homes because of the building system advantage they bring to the table. Framework for our custom homes are built in Wausau Home’s climate-controlled production facility, and then are shipped on site to be set within 2-5 days. The quality, consistency, and customization of the homes we build are pretty incredible.

What does being Builder of the Year mean to you?

Our team is very proud to be awarded Builder of the Year. We believe that every person who assists with a build is key to the project’s success, including subcontractors.

What qualities does it take to become Builder of the Year?

From our perspective, we think that to be Builder of the Year you need to be goal-oriented, motivated, honest, humble, and hard-working.

What part of the custom home building process do you find the most rewarding?

Seeing the homeowner take ownership of their dream that we were able to help create is the most rewarding part of building.

How do you stay successful as a custom home builder?

Always assess where you are with reaching your goals, as well as surrounding yourself with positive-minded people who are driven to do their best!

What advice would you give other builders wanting to become Builder of the Year?

Do not lose focus of where you are at with work and yourself, stay grounded!

If you were building your dream home what is the one feature you would have to have?

A large gathering room (also known as a great room) with a ‘Northwoods’ feeling, including a wooden canoe doubling as a light fixture.

What events can interested home buyers find you at in the coming months?

We will be at the Tomahawk Home, Sport and Travel Show on April 4th and 5th, as well as supporting many local events in the Minocqua community.

This is a business that you wouldn’t expect repeat customers, but it has been encouraging how many times I have had repeat customers. I’ll always treasure building homes for three generations of the same family. That is extremely special to me.
