Pet-Friendly Home Tips & Tricks

If you’ve got pets, you know a pet-friendly home is a must. Whether you have cats, dogs, hamsters, or maybe a mixture, they’re going to spend most‚ if not all, of their time in your house. So, how do you make sure the place is a perfect fit for Fido and Fluffy?

Here are a few tips to create a pet-friendly home.

1. Keep your pets clean.

Pets are part of the family, and as such, they deserve to live in a comfortable, safe home. If you’re looking to make your home more pet-friendly, there are a few things you can do. First, keep your pets clean. A regular grooming routine will help to keep shedding under control and prevent your furniture from becoming covered in hair. Nobody likes to sit down and find pet hair on their clothing, so it’s best to keep things as clean as possible.

This may seem obvious, but it’s amazing how many people forget to bathe their pets on a regular basis. Not only will this help keep your pet’s fur clean and free of tangles, but it will also help to keep your home free of pet hair and dander. In addition, you should trim your pet’s nails regularly. Overgrown nails can be painful for your pet and can also contribute to scratches and other damage to your home. By taking these simple steps, you have started the process of keeping your pet-friendly home clean and comfortable for both you and your furry friends.

2. Pick durable materials.

You don’t want your home to appear like it’s been taken over by dogs, no matter how much you adore your pet. Choose hard-wearing floorings, such as tile, vinyl, or stone, that is simple to clean, stain-resistant, and toenail-proof to keep your home looking brand new. If you can’t get rid of your affection for carpets, pick a hue that matches your pet so missing hairs blend in. To prevent accidents, make sure area rugs are properly backed up with pads.

Durable materials will help you avoid costly repairs down the line. Carpet may be comfortable for your pet to lie on, but it’s not going to last as long as tile or hardwood. If you want your home to withstand the tests of time, choose materials that can stand up to whatever your pet throws its way.

3. Having pet-friendly products on hand.

Have you ever come home to find your furry friend has had an accident on the carpet? Or, maybe you have a pet that likes to chew on things and you’re constantly finding teeth marks on your furniture.

One way to create a pet-friendly home is to have pet-friendly products on hand to remove stains from carpets and rugs. This way, if there is an accident, you can quickly and easily clean it up without worrying about damaging your floors. There are a variety of pet-friendly stain removers on the market that are safe to use around animals. You may also want to consider investing in some slipcovers for your furniture. This way, if your pet likes to chew or scratch, they can do so without ruining your couch or chairs.

4. Choose pet-friendly window treatments.

When it comes to pet-friendly homes, window treatments are often overlooked. However, it’s important to choose window treatments that are safe for your pet. Some window treatments, such as blinds with long cords, can be dangerous for pets if they become entangled. Instead, choose window treatments that are cordless or have short cords that are out of reach. This can help to avoid accidental strangulation if your pet should get tangled in the cords.

Window film is also a great pet-friendly option because it can be applied directly to the glass and doesn’t have any dangling cords. Films with a static cling application are also easy to remove, so you can take them down when your pet isn’t home and put them back up when they are. Pet-friendly window films are a great way to keep your pet safe and your windows stylish.

5. Minimize dirt.

Dogs are great companions, but they don’t always know how to keep their feet clean. That’s why it’s important to establish a pet-friendly area in your home that minimizes the amount of dirt that gets tracked inside. One way to do this is to create an animal area at an entry or in a mudroom. This will help prevent dirt from being tracked throughout your home and make it easier to clean up after your pet. In addition, be sure to choose flooring that is easy to clean and durable enough to stand up to pet traffic. With a little planning, you can create a space that both you and your pet will love.

When you need to dry fur, use a storage shelf or basket to keep towels within easy reach. The last thing anyone needs is to have a wet dog to keep in place while looking for a towel. Finally, attach a beautiful hook to the wall for a handy leash hanger.

6. Keep safety in mind.

Pets are great companions, and more and more people are choosing to keep them in their homes. This means making sure that all potential hazards are removed from the home or at least out of reach of curious pets. It’s important to keep safety in mind when making your home pet-friendly. Some simple steps you can take to keep your pet safe include:

  • Keep all chemicals and cleaning products out of reach, or better yet, stored in a locked cupboard.
  • Make sure your trash cans have tight-fitting lids to prevent scavenging.
  • Don’t leave food out on countertops or tables where it can be easily accessed by curious pets.
  • Keep sharp objects like knives and scissors stored in a safe place.
  • Choose pet-friendly furniture and materials that won’t be easily damaged by claws or teeth.
  • Be mindful of small items around the house that could pose a choking hazard.

By taking a few extra precautions, you can help create a safe and inviting environment for your furry friend.

7. Make a pet-friendly location.

A pet-friendly home doesn’t have to be a disaster for your décor. You can make a chic and stylish location for your furry friend that is both comfortable and practical. First, choose a spot in your home where your pet can have his own space. A kitchen nook or under a table are both good options. This spot should be a retreat for your pet but also easily accessible so they can come and go as they please.

Then, make sure you have a comfortable crate or bed for your pet to sleep in. Not sure if you’ve noticed this, but our animals spend a lot of time laying around. If they’re going to do this in our homes, we might as well make sure they’re comfortable. If it’s comfortable, chances are your pet will want to spend more time there and less time finding other spaces to get into that will get them into trouble. Pick a bed that is easy to clean and made from pet-friendly materials.

Be sure to also include some of your pet’s favorite toys in the space to make it feel like home. With a little planning, you can make a pet-friendly home that is both stylish and functional.
